I used to think the same way. Then I moved away from for a few decades. I moved back after I was older. Now I would never want to move away from family again.

If you did, you wouldn't be plump like the guy in the picture. Living off the land is tough and hard work.

You people apparently don't know what a mountain man is. They were the fur trappers in the Rockies in the 1840's-50's who did some of the first exploration of the area. They were fiercely independent, very entrepreneurial, and tough as a boot. They were not in ANY way related to the inbred rednecks of the Appalachians. Learn some history.

I'd love to live in a log cabin out in the forest someplace away from sirens, car alarms and rapists. Of ocurse bad things can happen ANYWHERE but a peaceful mountian cabin with a roaring fire sounds like heaven!

####you are naive and unrealistic. don't be lured by the romanticism. you are not cut out for the life. what you really want is to be able to afford to move to a place like the place you imagine only with electricity and heat and food and transportation. thats what you really want.

^2 OP here. I watched Jeremiah Johnson on amc last night, again, and I would not like roughing it. Too cold, too many bears, wolves, wild injuns etc...I would love the privacy, mountain air, beauty etc., but I would definitely need a modern cabin - with indoor plumbing, electricity, beer and groceries - Maybe, I would take a squaw!

That varmint on a stick is looking pretty good. The truth is, most true mountain men were a bit deranged. Whenever they tried to transition back into civilized life, they often went crazy. Jim Bridger is a case in point.
