I write poetry, but am too afraid to show it to anybody, even though I think it's pretty good. My friends would probably laugh and joke about it.

Then you don't have the right kind of friends!

Before you tell them make sure and let them know what it means to you. If they are really your friends they will give u their true opinion about how good it is. Your friends may joke about it a little. You must be willing to deal with it. Let them get it out of their system and then they will listen more closely.

I agree with the other posters. Friends are supportive. Always be yourself.

Try to find a place you can go by your self and share it strangers. If by chance they laugh try again with your friends. But dont be afrid many people are are afrid to express there feelings and there thoughts. Remember this that while some people may laugh or joke about what you wrote very few people are brave enough to share your thoughts and ideas.Open peoples minds and make them think. Good luck to you

People are sometimes intimidated by those who are willing to share such personal things. I say share it, learn from it, grow from it. Life's too short to stifle yourself.

I'm a writer. Just put yourself out there. FInd a local writer's group. Poetry can be beautiful, harsh, elegant or complex. If it's from the heart, poetry is never irrelevant. All the best.

try posting it online and pool people's reaction. I felt the same way about my music at first, but found people like it (well most of the time).

write, write, and keep writing!! Make a book ouit of it! Do it! I wish I had your discipline and talent. Who cares what your "friends" think. It's YOUR life.

Submit your work to a mag like Readers Digest as a starting point. Your friends are also good to try it out on. If they are truly your friends and like poetry, they should be honest. Not everyone is in to poetry and not everyone understands it.

I am a writer also and poetry is a lot like masturbation, in that, it may feel good to you, but to anyone who has to listen (or watch), it's just sorta embarassing.
