Today is Easter. As I sat at the table & ate a cold sandwich by myself I realized that I want to be a part of a big, loving family so bad I can't stand it.

I come from a big family, but they're not loving. They're all assholes. Count your blessings you don't have to deal with a bunch of self-righteous shitheads that you can't get rid of -- because they're your "family."

For years and years every holiday dinner was at my home. My whole family would come and eat and I loved it. We lost our home last August and lived in a hotel until December. Not one of my family members invited us to Thanksgiving dinner. So, I didn't invite anyone to our new home for Easter. I feel terrible. I miss having my family together.

Huge loving families are a figment of imagination. At least that's what I understand. But hey, everybody is entitled to dream.

My wife and I ended up spending the weekend alone since our children live a distance away and had to work. On days like that it would have been nice to have others join us for dinner but how do you ask?

I've been alone since I div. 15 years ago, never remarried. Friends never think to invite you, I think this is cruel, and thoughtless. Or they call at the last minute as a pity invite, almost worse. I even tried inviting 10 people to my house, it was fun for one day. I tend to not like people in general now- they disappoint. but I chose a family I met by accident, with 4 kids, and have bonded with them, am now a part of the holidays as much as I want, it is a good feeling, but not by any means perfect. My 15 year marriage with my husband's depressed, morose, lifeless family left me not wanting family at all for a while. Now I am glad I made this other friendship work. OP_ try to find someone thru volunteering and see if you can build your own 'family". but I truly understand exactly how you feel.

Sometimes even being with your family can be worse than being alone. I have a large family that gets together on Christmas and Thanksgiving and most of the time all of us are ready to leave the presence of eachother as soon as we walk through the door. My advice start your own parties on holidays with people that you enjoy being around.

I'm sorry. I spend holidays with my 6 older sibs and their partners. I can't imagine what it would be like without them. To all the people saying that big happy families aren't real, for shame. That's your experience, which is not definitive. My family is incredibly tight, and we love each other very, very much.
