My 13 year old son died of Cancer very suddenly 3 years ago...... People still come up and ask me how he is - after they sent me a card after his death.
I pretty much hate people now. Americans are truly selfish uncaring people.

I am truly sorry you lost your son. No parent should ever have to go through that. But you have to understand that in today's society when people say "retarded" they are not intended to offend anyone especially not the developmentally handicapped. Your son was special. That's all that matters. Don't let others ignorance bother you.

I have a son with special needs, and yet there are people around me that tease each other and say "oh you ride the special short bus" or you're retarded. They don't understand. These beautiful children are indeed special, it's not their fault, and who the hell are these ignorant people to say it so derogatorry like they are above all others, others with handicaps. Bless you.

I think the word retarded has become one of those common slang's we all use now days. Considering we went through a decade of relearning etiquette and now we say "mentally challenged". I truly don't believe that your "friends" would mean any harm or offense it they are really your friends. Thank God for comedians like Carlos Mencia who looks beyond the faux paus we all are conscious of and says it like it is.

THANKS for al the nice comments. of course they don't really mean retarded when they say it. They do mean it as slang but, it doesnt matter. It is very nsensitive. It is easy for yiu all to judge when yiou havent delt with a "retarded" child of your own. And I am sure sometime in my life I have used a term like that but I grew up as should my friends. Espicially since they know what I have been through. I think from now on I am going to tell them to stop using it around me or I wont go around them.

I am so sorry for your loss and the added stress of dealing with insensitive people. My son has Cerebral Palsy and is very delayed and I also find myself cringing when people use that word or make 'short bus' comments.

I am sorry you lost your son. Maybe if you talk to your "friends" they will stop. If not, get new friends! I was one of those stupid people who used the word a lot. I woked with a girl who's sister had Downs Syndrom. One day I said, "What am I retarded." The look on her face made me feel so ashamed, and I never used that word again. It's kinda like using the N word around an Africian American person. It's rude and offensive. I can't get over some of the comments people posted on here. It is a big deal, and you should stick up for yourself/your son!! God bless

To the person who said he probably wasn't offended and was more like his friends before he experienced this, why do you think that? As if he made fun of his son for being retarded, but is suddenly offended, because his friends say, "retarded". I ignore the morons who use phrases such as, "short bus" and "you're retarded". They are mediocre, because of their overwhelming tendency to follow what everyone else is doing/saying.
