I am $20,000 in debt. No one knows and although I am paying off the credit cards -slowly- it is eating me up inside. I feel like I am losing my mind sometimes.

it's time for people to stop buying stuff they don't need....that'll help. It's a hard lesson, but we have to start living within our means. Tough pill to swallow. Say no to consumerism.

dump the debt. seriously. I did and most that can happen is they bug you on the phone. Just tell them to f*** off.

but, they can *audit* your checking account, and on the day you get paid. Pull out your entire check, without your permission,or knowledge and pay a back over due debt on a charge card. So call them and work with them. Dont make them take desperate messures.

well they can't take your whole check and if they do you can counter sue them.and there is no sence in stressing over it just pay the bill and don't use it still it's payed for.the key thing is to comunicate with them and pay as much as possible

I filed bankruptcy before the new law. (Chapter 7) Best thing I ever did. It was only 3 years ago and today my credit is good and I am debt free. The laws are different now and I don't think it is as easy. I did it myself using the Nolo book on Chapter 7. I didn't even need a lawyer!

yeah you and about half of the u.s. dont feel bad at least your working on it, some just b**** and do nothing. GOOD JOB hang in there
Remove this stupid comment

just keep paying it- hang in there. keep expenses as low as possible. as cliche as it sounds, learn to enjoy the forgotten joys in life-- a brisk walk in the park, playing some tennis, instead of renting/seeing a movie, visit an old relative (they will feed you, too!)....you can do it.

I was too after my mom passed away 3 years ago. I went with a debt management company and have 1 more year and all 3 cards will be paid off. Try that, it actually works.

My father was about in the same size hole as you OP. Wife, 2 kids, making about 50K a year but still sliding deeper and deeper. Finally he just went bankrupt, and now has alot of loose cash every paycheck to spend or save how he wants. The rules may be different, but still check into it. Unless you stand to lose major assets, IE House, Boat, 2nd Car, its just a way to stop paying the insane interest you've been paying on your purchases. At the minimum payment, odds are you'll pay 2.5 to 10 times the amount owed. And really, they make enough cash as it is ruining lives.

I was over $25,000 in credit card debt. I got a small severence package from the factory I worked at. I used $1500 to file bankruptcy. most of that was for a lawyer the rest filing fees. But now I am debt free, unemployed but at peace. And ulcer free.

years ago I had one credit card. I kept it at it's limit. I'd buy anything if they said it was on SALE. I finally destroyed the card but it took me years to pay off the account. I now treat credit cards like alchol, I know I'm weak so I avoid BOTH.

I have over 30K in Credit Card Debt. Only none of the money was ever spent on myself or my family. It has accumulated over the past few years paying for major repairs after white trash tenants demolished two homes we rent out. Had to get the money from someplace to fix the houses, was not going to get any out of the dead beat tenants....... .......

I was 100,000.00 in debt that I did not know about until my divorce was filed and financial statement were shown. I cried at first not knowing what to do but,I sat down and wrote a plan on a pad of paper and stuck to it. I called every card company and made arragements with them after disclosing my situation. Every card company removed over the limit penalties and adjusted the interest. Some to 0%, except for Sears and Discover Card. They told me I should have been aware of my situation. I eventually paid every card off, Sears and Discover first and refuse to do business with either again. Thumbs up to Citi Bank and Chase for helping me through those troubling times.

You can pay it off and you will feel like you can do anything you set your mind to afterwards. It would help you to sell off the junk you bought to pay it off sooner. Don't let the possessions own you. I agree Discover is a villian.

Yeah I am right there with you. Dollar for Dollar. Might be debt free when I retire. I'm 34.

I work for a bankruptcy attorney. I see people in your position everyday. No one WANTS to file bankruptcy, but when it's over most feel relief that they couldn't imagine.
