Don't listen to the dopes. Follow your heart. I'm Bahai - essentially we believe that great spiritual teachers like Christ, Mohammed and Buddha teach essentially the same principles. There is too much ignorance about what a great religion Islam is. Just because some people have bastardized it (Ex: Taliban) doesn't mean that is its true intent. Oh, and I wouldn't get into a spitting match with a camel. If your family and friends would judge you so harshly, I personally wouldn't go there, but that's just me. If they are racist, decry their racism every chance you get. Be courageous and honest. Many of those who criticise your choice fear you will be seduced to doing evil in Allah's name. How did the prophet instruct you to support your fellow Muslim when he is in the wrong? Explain clearly, humbly, honestly where you are coming from. Listen with empathy and compassion without dismissing the concerns of those who love you and think you are mistaken. Live an example of goodness to induce others to follow you. Do not fall so much in love with your self-righteousness that you denigrate others.
