It's a fine thing. It's not something everyone has a right to know, unless you tell them. Even your parents have secrets you don't know. So be who you are, not some guided life missle dodging other peoples perceptions.

Do mom and dad think you're a Jeff Gordon fan?

You say you have "known" for years. Does that mean you're not living as a lesbian? And if not, why not? At 31, why is your parents' approval still so important? Sounds like you need to start living YOUR life, instead of the life others want you to lead.

They probably already know and just don't talk about it. Most (good) parents are pretty perceptive. On the other hand, it's not a bad thing to keep your sex life private. Sexual orientation is only a part of who you are and I never understand why some people feel the need to let the whole world know their personal business.

I have not come out to any of my family. My mom and dad are great people but their world is very small. Their lives revolve around the parish and their lodges and clubs and the charities they volunteer at. My siblings are taken up with their careers and kids. We have enough issues going on without me introducing one more. I have female friend for family functions, business dinners, etc, and we "cover" for each other. We live in a small city, and this works for us. Everybody has to do what's best in their own situation.
