That post was cathartic. Although the majority of police are decent, caring and moral, the job attracts a fair amount of shallow, controlling, sociopaths. Their devious manipulative personalities enable them to be promoted up the ranks. The average citizen rarely sees this side of law enforcement, but it (corruption) exists at every level, in every department. Many officers are particularly troubled by the hypocrisy, nepotism and cronyism, but they soon learn to fall in line lest they be outcast by their peers.

Thanks for posting that. It's what many cops think, but are unwilling to say.

I knew a cop who hit and insulted his sisters, bragged about how dishonest he was and was on the force until karma caught up with him and he had a motorcycle accident. He had to quit the force and go on workers comp.

You and the other honest cops do make a difference.

The politics in policing is nauseating. If you pissed off a co-worker 20 years ago, and now he is the Chief of Police, he will make your career miserable and nullify any promotions. Conversely, if you are the Chiefs close associate, he will cover-up your repeated acts of malfeasance and will reward you with undeserved promotions.

Anyone who's achieved the rank of Captain, Chief or Commissioner is usually among the most corrupt and morally bankrupt in the department. They have paid their dues to whatever politician calls the shots, and now that politician owns them.

I knew of a cop who faked a back injury so he could study for a promotional exam. He scored in the top 3, and eventually was appointed Chief of Police. He is the most vile, disgusting, cheating, abusive SOB that you'll ever meet. He retired on a $70,000 pension, and now works for Homeland Security in Upstate NY.

I didn't know this. I knew there was some, but didn't realize how big it is. Thank you for posting this. I found it very informative! Now does anyone know how it can be fixed?
Remove this stupid comment

It's endemic. It cannot be "fixed." It's tolerated because you have a profession, (semi-profession actually), that is based on machismo and phony toughness. It is a closed society. If you complain to the administration (Chiefs), you risk being labeled a RAT, and in this job your life may depend on your partner. The "corruption" is usually small scale: ticket-fixing, nepotism in hiring/promotion. However... NEARLY EVERY police dept with over 50 officers has SOME incident of a large scale that has been covered-up or swept under the rug. This can range from Civil Rights violations, to Grand Larceny, to false reporting. -20YRS. PD

...stay tuned, I'm just getting started. BTW, the Statute of Limitations for prosecution has expired on anything to be disclosed.

I'm a cop and I don't trust many of my co-workers. I may like them, but I don't trust them. For some, the job is only about the paycheck, benefits and overtime (see above post RE: administrators). Safe to say that the system of checks and balances is evolving. Now, EVERYTHING is on camera. Our in-car DVR video system runs whenever the car is on-not just in pursuits. There is no way to override it, no way to turn it off. There are numerous cameras throughout the stationhouse as well. On the flipside, lawsuits against municipalities have become a cottage industry. Many cops carry their own micro-recorders to protect against false allegations.

The savagery in society has definitely increased in the past 20 years, especially when it comes to family violence. Fortunately, the law allows for an arrest even though the victim (usually the woman) is not cooperative. What worries me most is the generation of kids raised on Ritalin and video games. Theirs is a world of instant gratification, and selfishness and dependence. They have never experienced hardship, and have little respect for authority.

My dad's a cop... My mom wants me to go out to the bars with my dad and his friends sometime. They're all cops... I've heard stories from all of them...I don't want to go. I think my mom wants me to go so I can watch out for him... He's 54 years old and his body is shutting down, but he doesn't want his buddies or our family to know...

Tough Job, Tougher Life outside of it. You're never really able to 'take off the uniform'.I wouldn't do it for any amount of money, unless I knew I could be a 'Charles Bronson' type vigilante, and wipe out all the lowlife predators around me, and get away with it.Our world has gone mad.

It is certainly refreshing to hear of another cop that feels this way. The biggest problem I've seen is indeed nepotism, followed closely by so many clearly sociopathic personalities. I'm talking about some truly evil people! So I walked away from it all...

My father was a policeman for nearly 40 years. He was also sickened by the morally bankrupt who always happened to be in charge. He was railroaded for chief in favor of a murderer who was rotten to the core. The chief was brought down 11 years later in an FBI investigation and I KNOW my old man was extremely satisfied while he inventoried the former chief's city property, pointing out missing items, threatening him with theft if he didn't return them. My dad caught that bastard chief planting drugs at crime scenes and setting people up. Once he tried to set my dad up in a drug bust gone bad. The former chief is barely alive today, dying of cancer and I can't wait to see his worthless, sorry ass meet his judgement.Hold your chin up! You CAN make a difference!

I just wish laws were more sane. I think only violent people should be in prison. Drugs (without violence) should net you some rehab. But there are far too many laws that when applied wreck lives. There will always be bad cops. Just do your best to not be one of them.

I used to respect the profession and the people, but I am also disenchanted with them. Especially since one entered my home and shot my husband 4 times! Who invited him there? NO ONE! He was and is out of control. Still has a bad. Still has a gun. My husband is STILL dead. I hate cops!

My best buddy is now an officer, and I have gotten to know a lot of cops over the years, from local pd to state p, i know there are those that abuse the shield, they are the bad ones not all officers. Im sick of the corruption, but im also sick of those who say that what they caused to happed is someone elses fault and they did no wrong. It takes a strong man or woman to admitt there is something wrong with the system, but its even harder to get others to help them fix the system. "To Serve and Protect is there code, to Honor and Respect is mine!" Thanks for all you do.

i am a cop of 6 yrs still young at it but believe in treating people like i want to be treated and dont take what i have not worked honestly for, but 23,500 a year causes me to work 2 jobs.i think the pay has alot to do with crooked officers to.
Remove this stupid comment

They know what the pay is when they take the job..If they are dishonest, it is because they are dishonest people..The job and low pay has nothing to do with it. There is No Excuse for being crooked.

In my experience, the type of people who are attracted to becoming a police officer are the exact opposite of who should become one. I have only met three officers who I felt were honest, respectful and truly serving the public.

my step dad and 2 uncles are cops and they are great people at work and not. not every cop is a corrupt dick. i promise. follow the damn law and nobody would have the issues you have....you get pissy with the cop when he pulls you over so he is a dick right back. he is doing his job..do yours and be a law abiding citizen. not that hard

With the economy as bad as it is, when a police department is hiring (usually one officer) they test for applicants, and usually have 100-200 people show up for one opening. After the testing is said and done, the relative of the Sgt. Lt. or Chief get's hired. I want to get into law enforcement badly, but if you can't kiss ass just right, your shit out of luck.
Remove this stupid comment

It is truly sickening. The good guys that sound the alarm at the corruption get their careers and names ruined. Meanwhile, the bad guys, the corrupt ones, end up on a golden pedestal. Thin blue line, indeed.
